Miuccia Prada rarely sits for interviews, but she made an exception for La Repubblica. The fashion designer chat very candidly with the Italian newspaper on fashion and politics, and we have all the deets. Miz Prada touched everything about luxury brands leaving Italy, designers brushing off Italy and the Italian Press and politicians not taking fashion seriously.

Here’s what Miuccia said:

On luxury labels being manufactured outside of Italy:

“With the sale of our luxury labels to foreigners, our entire system risks falling into second league. Because if our brands cross our borders, the credit, glamour, fame and decision making is in the hands of others, and we are abandoned, downgraded.”

On designers snubbing Italy:

“You can’t blame them. [Raf Simons was] already highly considered [when he worked with Jil Sander, but is now working for Dior in Paris], his value will further be emphasized.”

On the Italian Press and politicians not taking fashion seriously:

“[They are] frivolous. [They] remain diffident toward wealth and glamour. [Money can help] organize art, culture and fashion.”

Prada also admitted that that the country has “less resources, culture, protagonists, ideas, vitality and money,” so “fashion goes elsewhere, looking for the best.”

She then added that she was “looking for that attraction that is called glamour,” which is why she chose Paris to show her Miu Miu collection.

Miuccia finished by saying:

“We live in a weak cultural world, we are a country that has never wanted or known how to protect and promote its immense landscape and artistic patrimony.”

Is Italy that far back in the fashion world now?

It’s sad to think that the designer has even taken to Paris to showcase her designs even though she’s Italian.

Apparently, Italy is not where it’s at anymore!
